The main screen of the main program features an eight-item menu. Included are commands to review account codes (the preset categories use one or two-letter codes), enter data, revise data, save data, erase data, input data from cassette, output results to screen and quit. The output to screen command allows the user to choose either screen display or printer options. Choosing the printer option results in a message telling you to load the printer routine into memory.
Account codes are simple to understand, based usually on the first wordof the budget item they represent."F", for example, represents "food." Data entry is directed by screenprompt. Each entry must include theaccount code and the amount. Enteringa non-existent code results in anerror message. You may then reenterthe proper code and continue. At anytime, you may press a key to return tothe main menu. Also, this screen displaysdisplaysthe number of data entries youhave left before the available memoryis used up. Total amounts for any dataentry may be up to $99,999.99. The revise data screen lets youchange any data entry. It includes acommand to change data filed underthe predefined categories and anothercommand to change data filed under auser-defined category. The · save data screen lists thenumber of items in memory. You areasked to enter the name of the monthprior to actually saving the data. Thisfeature allows you to use up to 20 characters, essentially to define the datafile. As with all the screens, if youchange your mind you may press a keyto return to the main menu withoutaffecting the data in memory. The erase data screen gives you achoice of erasing all data in memoryor erasing either predefined data oruser-defined data. The data input screen allows you toload data out of one of two cassetterecorders. While loading, the namethat you gave the data file, whether thename of the month or something else, appears as well as the number of dataentries. The output screen allows you to displaythe data on the screen or to call upthe printer routine. The screen displayis not nearly as effective as the printerroutine, which uses 64 columns. Theprintout includes the name of the category, the amount budgeted, the actualamount spent, the difference betweenthe budgeted and the actual amountand the percentage of the actualamount to the budgeted amount. Oneproblem with the screen display is thatonce you start you must view all databefore you can return to the menu.Although this takes only 20 seconds orso, I'd just as soon have the option toreturn to the menu immediately afterviewing the data I wanted "to see. The budget is divided into five sections:variable expenses, fixedexpenses, utilities and credit, offbudgetoff budget expenses (user defined) andmonthly balance. The monthly balancecategory shows the entries madefor income, dividends and interestincome and other income sources. Itthen shows the entries made in federal, state and social security taxes. The amount spent under the total ofbudget categories is then deductedfrom the net income and the amount ofmoney remaining is reported. Thisscreen summarizes total expenses anddisplays the net results for the month. ==Ease of Use: == Using any financial
