Castling
In order for castling to be possible, all of the following conditions must be satisfied:
## Neither the king nor the rook involved may have moved earlier in the game.## The squares between the king and the rook must all be empty.## The opponent must not be attacking (checking) the king - more on this in a moment - and he must not be attacking the squares over which the king passes or the square on which it lands.
Here White can castle king-side, (the right hand side of the board) moving his king to G 1 and his rook from H1 to Fl, but not on the queen-side (the left hand side of the board) because Black's bishop on G4 attacks D1.
