Star Trek
The graphics in Star Trek are clean of line and functional. There's not much to see in outer space, you know. Sound is used to represent the explosion of torpedoes and the firing of phasers. You also hear a plink when a Klingon crashes into the hull of the Enterprise. The voice synthesizer is used more effectively in this game than in Parsec. The voice is much clearer in this game. It announces the sector number as you enter it and offers such encouragement as "excellent maneuvering, captain" during the course of the game. Color is well integrated into the game. both in terms of function and appearance.
Although the 3-D viewer takes uphalf the display screen. , its function islimited. It provides a close-up view ofoncoming Klingons and torpedoes andhas a targeting feature to use with thephasers. However. if you haven'talready destroyed the Klingons beforethey loom large in front of the bridgeyou can be sure that the Enterprisewill suffer damage. Everything on thisscreen moves fast as you rotate thebridge to put the target in view. Youwill be able to watch only one screen ata time so your best bet is to destroy theKlingons before they get near theEnterprise. The depiction of Klingonvessels and other objects is more fullydeveloped in the viewer than the graphics graphics used by the radar screen. Points are scored for each Klingon., Anti-Matter Saucer and Nomad destroyeddestroyed. Points are also accumulatedfor using a starbase. , though you canget four times as many points for notusing a starbase. A multiplication factor factor is used in tallying the score basedon the .. round" number. For example.Sector 1.1 is round 1 and Sector 1.2 isround 2. This factor affects pointsawarded for all but the Anti-MatterSaucer. ===Ease of Use: === This game can beplayed with joysticks or the keyboard.I prefer the keybaord keyboard because not alljoystick commands come naturally. For example. to move the Enterpriseforward in warp drive. you have to pullthe stick back. Very unnatural. The keyboard commands use theleft and right arrow keys for directionand the H-J-K-L keys for everythingelse. ===Documentation: === TI has once againprovided an excellent manual for itssoftware. It includes strategy tips aswell as the usual how-to material.Value: I enjoyed playing this game, but I reached my level of competenceafter several hours. I've little hope ofgetting beyond the sixth sector. But forthose who think they can do bettereverytime every time they play a game. this onewill provide quite a challenge.
